The liner restore is a custom formulation designed to patch the superficial cracking that occurs when the kiln is fired and the alumina silicate liner stabilizes after shrinking. The alumina silicate liner shrinks approximately 5 to 8 percent after the initial firing and seasoning the of kiln. This phenomenon is the nature of the beast so to speak and is to be expected with this refractory material.
Once the liner has stabilized the liner restore can be used to patch any cracking encountered as well as patch any liner erosion due to dusting or small spills of borax flux onto the liner. The liner restore is a water-based formulation and can be thinned slightly by adding a small amount of water to the liner restore and thoroughly mixing if desired.
The recommended procedure for patching the superficial cracking is to wear nitrile gloves and press the liner restore material into the cracks filling them up. Once the cracking and or patching is completed allow the liner restore material to dry completely before firing the kiln again. Approximately 8 to 12 hours is required depending upon the amount of liner restore applied to the liner. Drying time can be shortened by using a hair dryer or placing the kiln in a warm environment such as in a sunny location. A small amount of liner restore goes a long way in this custom formulation.
DO NOT EXPOSE THE LINER RESTORE TO FREEZING TEMPERATURES!!!!
